Special pennies approved for 2009
To mark Lincoln's 200th birthday

WASHINGTON - Congress has given final approval to a redesign of the penny to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birthday.

The redesigned pennies will be issued in 2009 as part of the bicentennial festivities. The pennies will feature four new designs on the back of the current coin, each representing a different phase of the 16th president's life.
The designs will depict his birth and childhood in Kentucky, his youth in Indiana, his professional life in Illinois and his presidency in Washington. The present image of Lincoln will remain on the front.
"From modest Midwestern roots, Lincoln rose to the presidency through his intelligence, integrity and commitment to the nation that he loved, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said in a statement. "To honor the 200th anniversary of his birth, this special series of coins will pay tribute to his life and work."
The House approved the redesign late Tuesday as part of a larger package to commemorate presidents on a series of $1 coins. The Senate passed the measure last month. The treasury secretary will choose the four designs after consulting with ...
